Let’s hear your love story!
We met in January of 2009 through a friend of Dave’s who was also in Becca’s grad school program. He had wanted to set us up for a while. He told Becca that Dave was the “nicest guy I’ve ever known” so she figured she might as well meet him! We got set up on a blind date at Union Street that also included many of Dave’s friends. It was kind of awkward, Dave was really quiet and shy. After that Dave asked his friend for Becca’s e-mail address and Dave sent the first email the day after Valentine’s day while she was in San Francisco with her college roommates. We e-mailed back and forth for a few months getting to know each other and asking questions back and forth. Finally, after much anticipation we met up again when Dave was in Boston for work (he was living in Maine at the time for boat design school). We hit it off and started dating that weekend. For our first date, we had sushi and saw the Twilight movie – he’s totally a keeper, right! We visited each other on weekends and Dave moved down to Boston after he graduated and moved in with some friends. It was then that we really got to spend more time together and get to know each other better over the next couple of years. We took trips together, met each other’s family, and both knew pretty quickly that we wanted to spend our lives together. We moved in together in 2011, which served to both test our relationship and let us know that our love was strong enough to get through just about anything! We started talking about getting married and raising a family and all those fun things and Dave proposed in August of 2012.
How did you/he pop the question?
I had been working late and came home on a Friday night. I had called Dave on the way home to see what he wanted to do for dinner and he said “we’ll figure something out,” which is unlike him as it was late and he’s always thinking about food. So, I start thinking that something is weird. I got home and saw from the street that all the lights inside were off. Zeus bounded out from the backyard when I got out of the car and then quickly disappeared (I continue to think something fishy is going on). As I walk up the front porch and open the front door, I see candles all around the apartment. I immediately start to cry and know that something epic is about to happen. As I put down my bags and keys I see that there is a ribbon tied from where we hang our keys and it zig-zags all around the apartment. From the foyer through the living room, to the dining room, into the kitchen, and out the back door onto the porch. Attached to the ribbon are cards with memories, jokes, and things he loves about me. Some highlights include “walking the beach on the cape looking for sea glass,” “passing back a flash drive of music when we lived in different states,” “sleeping on the 16 hour bus ride in ecuador to be awoken by men with guns” “how we always want the best for each other” I read them all and walked around the apartment intermittently laughing and crying as I went. Then it took be out the back door of the kitchen onto the porch and there were more! And Dave was standing there too so I didn’t know whether to hug him or keep reading them! I read the rest and then Dave got down on one knee and said some wonderful romantic words and then proposed! He then took me to dinner at 10 Tables, where we celebrated before calling our friends and family.
Who was the first person you told about your engagement?
How did you decide where you wanted to get married?
We started off thinking we were going to get married on the cape. It was difficult to agree on something (my mom had strong opinions, as she grew up on the Cape) so our compromise was a farmhouse off the cape. We wanted to be outside and somewhere beautiful that also had amazing food. We also liked the idea of having lots of space and that Zeus could join us. Harrington Farm had all of that and more!
What has been your favorite part of wedding planning?
Dave – the guest list, because I get to think about all the awesome people I get to celebrate my wedding with.
Becca – all the parts where friends and family have contributed some of their talents and then getting to see it all come together. Oh, and dress shopping was really really fun too!!
Let’s hear a little bit about your vision, the unique details that you are adding to the day!
We feel like our wedding is the celebration of our love story and just as important, our friends and family being a part of that story. So our friends and family will be included because as we take this important step in our relationship, we want the people who have been so important in our lives to witness and support us. They have all been a part in creating who we are as individuals and we want them to be there as we commit to each other and start our family and our lives together. So hopefully, our appreciation of friend and family will come out strongly throughout the weekend. Our idea is for it to be a comfortable, casual, fun celebration of love and romance. So there will be lots of fun music and things that are specific to us and our tastes. Our dog, Zeus will be at the ceremony and Becca’s dad will be officiating! We are having a non-traditional dessert (a surprise!), which we are really excited about because we don’t really like cake. Our guest book will also be something different. We are asking guests to sign pieces of fabric, which my mom and I will then make into a wedding quilt for Dave and I to snuggle under! We always cuddle on the couch with the animals to watch TV and wanted the “guest book” to be something we used and saw every day rather than something that sits on a shelf. Becca’s mom’s artwork is featured on the invitations and she is an incredibly talented pastel artist. Our cousin, Mara (Neither Snow), did the calligraphy and its beautiful and amazing and we are so grateful to have her creativity as a part of the wedding!
Is there anything that you are making yourself for the wedding?
Yes! Some are surprises, so those you will find out later. But, we are having some wood details for escort cards, signs, and programs that we are doing ourselves.
What are you honeymoon plans?
We haven’t decided yet! We have lots of other friends getting married this summer, so we hope to take a honeymoon in the winter, when it’s more fun to get out of Boston anyway. Dave wants something with Mayan ruins and Becca wants hiking and the beach, so somewhere with both of those things will be our destination!
What do you look forward to the most about being married?
Dave has often compared getting married to “leveling up” in a video game or “joining a secret club.” So we’re excited for the way it will feel to wake up and know we’re a part of the married people’s club! We also can’t wait for all the fun things life will bring us in the years to come!
