Let’s hear your love story!

Kate: Oh boy. Well we met at Canton SportsPlex one Thursday in 2012. My friend, Tee, was playing coed indoor soccer with Mike and his friends and they needed a female player to fill in.

Following the game, we all went to TGI Friday’s for drinks and Mike and I happened to be across the table from one another. We hit it off; I had never felt so at ease around a perfect stranger. The Boston accent was out of my comfort zone, but I managed to look past it ☺ It’s not the most romantic love story, but I always say that meeting people organically is the best way to do it.
Mike: Kate pretty much nailed it. We met at coed indoor soccer in early 2012 and we absolutely hit it off after the game. We started talking and it was like no one else was at the restaurant. We learned a lot about each other in such a short amount of time and before we knew it, everyone on our team was making fun of us because we ignored them the whole night. One thing Kate left out was that it was my soccer skills that caught her attention, not my accent.
What’s your favorite thing to do on any given Saturday together?

Kate: In the fall, we watch a lot of college football and in the winter we watch a lot of college basketball haha we like sports! Generally, we like to stay busy – we’ll go out with friends, spend time with family, or do things just the 2 of us. It’s never the same, which is what keeps it so fun.

Mike: We do love sports, which is really nice because I don’t get yelled at for wasting a Saturday on the couch watching football or basketball. We also love to travel and will look for any open weekend to go on a trip.

What is one trait that you love about in your fiancé?

Kate: I love Mike’s positive attitude/calm demeanor. I’m very type A, so when I stress about insignificant things, Mike helps me put everything into perspective. He’s also a lot of fun to be around—we laugh a lot!
Mike: I love how Kate challenges me. I don’t want to be with someone who will agree with me just to avoid a tough situation. If I tease her, or if I’m acting like a wise ass, she’s not afraid to give it right back to me and I love that. It makes for a very fun relationship.
Tell us your engagement story.

Kate: It was early October 2015. We wanted to get away for a weekend before the weather got cold, so I planned a trip to Kennebunkport, ME. I booked the hotel, made the dinner reservations, looked into some things to do, etc. Mike completely hijacked my weekend, but for good reason ☺ We went to Goose Rocks Beach on Sunday afternoon and Mike got down on one knee in the sand. I was caught so off guard that I said, “why are you doing this now?” Despite my reaction, it was a very special moment!

Mike: So Kate left a few parts out. Yes, she planned a weekend getaway for us to Kennebunkport. I knew for over a month that I was going to propose that weekend but I couldn’t decide if I would do it on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Well, Kate left me no choice. She is a big Notre Dame football fan and sadly, ND lost Saturday night to Clemson. Kate ended up drowning her sorrows in one too many vodka sodas. Saturday night was no longer an option and neither was Sunday morning because she stayed in bed until about 1. I finally convinced her to get out of bed, we drove to Goose Rocks Beach (I was so nervous), found a nice spot with no one else around, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. And yes, her first reaction was “why are you doing this now” followed by a resounding “YES!”
How did you decide where you wanted to get married?

We love Boston but we wanted something with a slower pace. We’ve gone to Portsmouth together a few times and it’s an awesome town! It’s also not too far from Boston, so we thought it’d be a pretty ideal Labor Day weekend wedding destination.

What has been your favorite part of wedding planning?

Kate: Hmm all of our vendors have been awesome to work with—it has been a painless process for the most part! I have really enjoyed working with our designer to design the wedding invitations and other print assets. I get to use some creativity, which is fun.

Mike: Picking the food options and finding a nice suit. Kate has taken care of everything else.

What’s one “genius moment” you had while planning your wedding that was a game changer for you?

Kate: My genius moment would have to be stealing all of my friends’ wedding vendors! Ha! I had seen each vendor at various friends’ weddings and knew what good work they did, so it was a no-brainer!

Mike: Letting my fiancée plan the whole wedding!

What do you look forward to the most about being married?

Kate: I’m looking forward to calling Mike my husband! We hope to travel as much as possible before settling down and having a family, so exploring new places together as a married couple will be amazing.

Mike: I know people say “I get to marry my best friend” all the time, but it couldn’t be more true with Kate. We have so much fun together and I’m looking forward to continuing that as husband and wife. Starting a family is going to be an amazing time in our lives, but before that happens, I hope we get to travel as much as possible and make plenty of memories in new places.
