Let’s hear your love story!
Katie: We met on an online dating website, which I swore I would never do. Friends convinced me to try it and I did for a month. At the end of the month I went on to cancel the account and had a message from Joel. We messaged nonstop for a few days and decided to go out for drinks. Our first date lasted five hours and because there was never a single lull in the conversation we even forgot to order dinner!
What’s your favorite thing to do on any given Saturday together? Brunch, disc golf (Joel will play, Katie will usually go for the hike and take a few shots!), checking out a brewery, hanging out with friends and playing games
What is one trait that you love about in your fiancé?
Katie: There are so many things I love about Joel but if I have to pick one I’ll say his dedication, because that applies to so many aspects of his life. When he makes up his mind to do something he sticks with it; he’s organized, motivated, and focused. And he’s been so dedicated to me and to our relationship.
Joel: She keeps me balanced, focused, and makes me want to be the best man I can be because she deserves nothing less.
Tell us your engagement story.
Katie: In May of 2015 it rained in Colorado for something ridiculous like 25 days straight. Finally one Saturday it was sunny, so we played disc golf, went out to brunch, then went back to Joel’s to hang out on the patio. He started talking about rings and showing me pictures online asking what I liked. We had already talked about marriage but this was the first time we talked about the engagement and rings part. We had dinner reservations for later that night so I went to get ready, and when I came back Joel got down on one knee! I was so stunned that I instantly burst into tears and wasn’t even positive that I had answered him. The ring conversation completely threw me off! It turns out that he had planned on proposing in July during our Montana road trip, but he found a ring early and couldn’t keep it a secret anymore. It was the best surprise of my life!
How did you decide where you wanted to get married? Katie: My whole family is on the east coast so we knew we wanted somewhere easily accessible for them. My two favorite places are Camp Pathfinder (in Canada’s Algonquin Provincial Park) and Stratton Mountain in Vermont. Mountain Meadows and the Killington area seemed like a nice combination of those two places. We wanted somewhere people would enjoy staying for a weekend. Outdoor activities were a must, and Mountain Meadows is on a lake, the Appalachian Trail runs right through the property, people can play disc golf or regular golf right next door, take the chair lift to the top of the mountain, etc. For Joel and many of his friends and family this will be the first trip to Vermont, and we wanted them to be able to make a vacation out of it and enjoy their stay!
What do you look forward to the most about being married?
Katie: I can’t wait to introduce each other to more favorite traditions and to start new ones together as a family.
Joel: I am most looking forward to starting a family and continuing to experience all life has to offer with her.
