Today we are so SO excited to introduce you (in case you haven’t already heard) to Abbi and Tanner and the newly opened Cunningham Farm! These two are actually a Bethany and Dan Photography couple who have become close friends of ours since their wedding in 2014. Even back when we first met with them over coffee, they were planning on making this venue dream a reality, and here and now in 2017, this bad boy is up and running! We are ITCHING to photograph a wedding here so please tell your friends and let’s make this happen asap!
Let’s get acquainted a little bit! Give us the quick and dirty about who you are and how this business got started?
We’re the Maguire family. We love Maine and think everyone should get married in this beautiful state we call home!
We started this business because we (Tanner and Abbi) loved planning our wedding. Maine is full of incredible people and wonderful businesses. We genuinely enjoyed developing relationships with the professionals that made our day so perfect. We were also inspired by the simplicity of our family’s ‘blank space’ property, which allowed us to build our wedding from the ground up and make it uniquely our own.
It was the three barns and beautiful fields of Cunningham Farm that excited us with the idea that we could give every couple the same opportunity to make their special day one-of-a-kind!
What’s the story behind the name?
This one was easy! The property was already named Cunningham Farm. We have the cutest timeline from the historical society about the history of the farm, but ultimately, we can thank John and Lucy Cunningham for falling in love back in the 1800’s!
Opening a business takes some guts! How long did you simmer on this idea before you were able to make it into a reality?
Opening a wedding venue was set in motion about four years ago. We spent years thinking of ideas and looking at properties that would incorporate giving couples the freedom to create an individualized wedding that made their “couple style and personality” come to life, as well as a property exceptional enough to give couples and guests alike a special atmosphere to revel within.
We loved the idea of a venue-only rental so that there were no preconceived notions about how to set the event up. Also, we absolutely adore the feeling of an estate wedding where friends and families come together and feel like they have their own, private piece of the world to celebrate with the couple. My in-law’s completely understood our vision and got onboard with starting the business, too!
During a snow-covered February day, we stepped foot on Cunningham Farm. Even in the barren winter, the property was absolutely breathtaking. There were three barns, a farmhouse, a pond, a river, a brook, rock walls, and a tree farm – complete with a white farm fence – we knew we had found our spot where a couple could get creative and mold their event to fit their own wedding style. We made an offer that day, and since then, we’ve been working around the clock to get the venue ready for our couples!
What would you say are your biggest challenges in owning your own business?
Four owners in the same family that are strongly opinionated! All of us fiercely want what’s best for our couples (we call them our Cunningham Couples, by the way J), but we don’t always agree. Ultimately, we all look at decisions from a different perspective, so it makes it so no decision gets overlooked!
Do you have “pinch me moments” when you look at the business you have created?
We are so new to the wedding industry, and this project really has been a labor of love. When we booked the very first person that came to look at the property, it was complete validation that other couples were looking for what we were several years ago during our own engagement. I am blinded with excitement to start seeing what our couples will come up with!
Just because, what’s your breakfast of choice? Breakfast Sandwiches on REAL NY bagels!
Bucket List Travel Destination? Backpacking South America, but specifically, I need to make sure we get to Peru!
