Adam and Sachi’s Day After Session

Since they wanted to spend some quality time with the nine people they had at their wedding, Adam and Sachi opted for a Post-Wedding Session. This happened on their wedding day, but after all the day’s events, since they happened in the morning-midday. We met up with them and headed to Waikiki for a few iconic Diamond Head images, before heading up the mountains for a more tropical forest vibe. We already let you know how much we love these two in the wedding post but seriously… don’t you love them too by now? It was a breath taking session for us and reminded us just how special our job is.

May West Trip Part Two: Oahu, Hawaii

And now for Part 2 of our “May West Trip,” the week in Hawaii!

Ahhhhh Hawaii. I love it so much… for so many reasons. This was our second trip to Hawaii, last December being the first. This time we spent time on the island of Oahu, staying in the iconic Waikiki Beach area. We also bought a three day GO Oahu Card, which got us into a lot of attractions. It was a perfect way for us to pack in some awesomeness on the trip and feel like we were saving a little money. I highly recommend it. We also brought the Oahu Revealed book along with us. It is by far our favorite Hawaii travel book. We have one for Maui too and it was like our bible last December. Do not be caught without this when you plan your own trip to paradise. Trust me…

Dan scored a ridiculously reasonable hotel within short walking distance of the beach. Our view was of the mountains which was actually quite nice! Here is the view and also an obligatory palm tree shot! 2014-05-11 08.15.26-2

The FIRST thing we did was walk down to the beach and get acquainted with this famous place. I’ll be honest, when I saw this statue I cried. I was just so happy and so thankful to be there. I had a moment where I was able to really see what a blessing it was to be there, to be hired by two sweet people to photograph their wedding, having been flown across the earth to be there. I’ll elaborate on the significance of that another day but suffice it to say I was overwhelmed and so so happy.Processed with VSCOcam with k3 presetBET_5056Damn what a good looking place eh? We went swimming a couple of times there, which is actually rare. Whenever Dan is in the ocean, he is doing some sort of sport. I can never get him to stop surfing for any amount of time to just float around with me. The fact that he did not have a surfboard was all that stopped him. He did eventually rent one for a few sessions but that was after I got my rare swim time. Clearly I felt a strong need to document the crap out of it. Here is a small percentage of the photos I took of that rare occurance, thanks to my LifeProof case and my iPhone 5s.

My sweet Dan. I love his man so much.computer edited 0024

Before Adam and Sachi’s Post Wedding Session (coming to the blog TOMORROW), Dan and I scouted out places to take them. They wanted less beach and more woods and plants for their session, so we took a couple of hours one day to find the perfect spots. Let me just say, I am so so happy they asked for that. I think otherwise we would have just beached it up (since we are complete beach people). Instead we found this MAGICAL spot: Puu Ualakaa State Park. Holy. Moley. LOOK AT THE VIEW! (yes Im yelling) You’ll see how it turned out with them. I died inside with happiness.Processed with VSCOcam with c2 preset2014-05-12 13.11.10

One of the days we went to the North Shore to see some famous surf spots and we also hit up the Dole Plantation. What a tourist trap! Personally Im all about trouisty things but this was a bit excessive. Most of the place was a store and the rest was just attempts at getting you excited about things to buy at the store. That being said… I learned that there are a TON of varieties of pineapple and that they are “wittle tiny babies of cuteness” as they grow. Also… Dole Whip: the most perfect treat ever, soft serve pineapple ice cream. I thought you could only get this at the Dole Plantation and The Magic Kingdom in Disney World however that myth has officially be debunked. I saw it being served outside of the Sheraton Waikiki AND I know its at the Polynesian Resort at Disney World.

I think Dan looks super handsome here. I know he’s kind of grimacing but it was a sweet moment. We walked to Pipeline (small day… no monster waves) and we were just staring at the ocean for quite a long time. I was taking some photos (as always) and he turned to look at me, squinty buy handsome.2014-05-11 15.56.45-1

We headed back to the hotel and then this happened out our window. Again… I cried. And Spazzed.

The number one thing we wanted to see and do on our trip was see Pearl Harbor and all the historical things they wanted to show and teach us. It was a bucket list item for both of us nearly all of our lives so… clearly we went. It was unbelievable and hard to put into words. You need to go and you need to wear good shoes. ha! Also, bring tissues, your camera, money for coffee (because it’s exhausting). Also… the USS Missouri is a must see. I dont think I really have the right words to describe the experience so I will leave that to you when you visit.

A somewhat logical step after that is the Byodo-In Temple. From war to peace.

Another beautiful night in Wakiki. We just sat and watched the sunset on this bench. That is what I call a perfect evening.2014-05-14 18.26.23-2

Other things we did? The Bishop Museum, which was SUPER educational and totally worth the stop. We also stopped in at the HE>i shop, where we got a sweet decal for the car. #heisgreaterthanicomputer edited 0029

OF COURSE we went to a Luau! How could we not?computer edited 0033We had a farewell swim the gorgeous waters of Waikiki, just hours before we met Ashley and Marshall for dinner and a mini-photo session. She blessed us with her energy and skill on a few rolls of film. I am dying to see what the images look like!! It’s been so long since we have had our photos taken and this was absolutely perfect timing in our lives. #happy Make sure to check out her work: Ashley Goodwin PhotographyProcessed with VSCOcam with c3 preset

Then it was the LONG trip home time. We fly from Honolulu to Portland Oregon to Seattle to Boston and then took the bus back here to Portland Maine. Not pleasant… except for three VERY pleasant details. Free drinks on BOTH of the two first legs of the trip and then on the Seattle to Boston flight we had an empty seat between us. OMG!! computer edited 0098computer edited 00952014-05-18 08.05.47

You know you are living in the right place though when you are just as happy to be home as you are in “paradise.” I would say we went from Paradise to Paradise.

Adam and Sachi’s Honolulu Hawaii Wedding

Where do I begin?

I love these two people and the funny thing is that I fell in love with them within ten minutes of finally meeting them in person. They live in Japan and we had been meeting them via Skype for 6 months leading up to their Honolulu Wedding. Now of course we really liked them before meeting them but I can’t explain how wonderful they truly are with my word limitations. Are there words to describe how it feels when someone, on their wedding day, takes you out for dinner? Are there words to describe when a bride hugs you and tells you that she is so excited to see you and that she has been looking forward to it for a long time? Are there words to describe a family who is having a incredibly small and intimate ceremony who welcome you with open arms its as if you are a guest yourself? I mean almost every conversation that took place in Japanese was promptly translated for me by Sachi, even just regular conversation. They were so polite and inclusive. It meant so much to me, even that small detail. So that is a tiny peek into the two of them from just a few hours spent with them.

Adam and Sachi met while she was studying at Adam’s College in Oregon. They fell in love and Adam moved across the Pacific to Japan, where they were legally married. They have actually been married for over three years before they were able to have their dream wedding in Hawaii! There were 9 guests, all with camera’s in hand. I loved how important photographs were to everyone involved. I asked Adam if he wanted a break from photos for a little while to enjoy the post-ceremony time before the reception and he said, “Nah… taking photos is pretty much what a Japanese wedding prioritizes, after the actual importance of the ceremony of course.” Now THAT is something I can get behind. Yay photos!!

After their ridiculously romantic ceremony at The Bayer Estate, complete with Ukulele music and the calm sounds of the Pacific Ocean, we all shared some cake. Next they moved to the The Hau Tree Lanai at The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel for a post wedding meal with their guests. It was…. perfect.

O and by the way… this isn’t the last you’ll see of these two on our blog. They opted for a Day-After Session too! We have some more couple shots of the two of them to come very soon.

Brooke and Sam’s Huntington Beach CA Wedding

Brooke and Sam met playing coed sports before they became the founders of their own Orange County Adult Sports League, Beach City Sports! As a result, they had a big fun crew at their wedding, down to party and full of love for these two as they tied the knot. They even incorporated football into their wedding day.

Our own story with Brooke goes back a bit further, Dan having been to college with Brooke. She even came to our wedding and actually did my hair for it. Needless to say, when she reached out to us to photograph her wedding to Sam in Huntington Beach, we were 100% stoked.

On the day of, the weather was spot on, not that this is a surprise considering the location in Huntington Beach. Brooke’s dog Joey, even made the ceremony as an honorary groomsmen! After the ceremony and photos, the dance party began and it didn’t really stop until the last song. One of my favorite parts of the day was when Sam’s sister gave the DJ a CD of Jordanian music, and all the family cheered and proceeded to dance: Jordanian Style. What could be more fun to see? It was a wonderful day with a sweet ending of Chinese Lanterns with their last remaining partiers.

Luke and Maureen’s Hollywood Portrait Session

We just got back from a two week adventure in the west, staying a week in Hollywood and then another week in Honolulu. While we were in LA, we stayed with two of our long-time friends: Luke and Maureen. Dan has known Luke since he was a youngin’ back in the days of their home-schooling. They taught sword fighting to younger kids in their co-op and generally were a dynamic duo, taking over the Raleigh-Durham area with their antics, (I may be exaggerating a bit but they totally did teach sword fighting). Maureen and Luke started dating right before Dan and I got married, and they came to our small wedding. Maureen is a Fine Art photographer and Luke is an Actor. Together they make quite the hot number don’t you think? We had a blast with them, touring the sights of LA and enjoying catching up. Here are a few images from our little impromptu session after Maureen got out of class in Hollywood. These were all taken on one street, just outside of the building she is taking classes in. Thank you to the random street we were on for being so darn cool.
